Quiet Hour Costa Rica Mission Report
September 24, 2006
By Connie Gravestock

“Blow you the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; Joel 2:1

The opportunity came for my husband and me to do our first mission trip together in Costa Rica. From the beginning, we prayed that the Holy Spirit would prepare the soil of each heart for the work to be done through us as well as our entire group.

Along with Pastor John Hughson, we were assigned to work with the Guapiles congregation. The tour guide brochure actually said there was no reason to go to Guapiles! The first meeting site was a dingy, unfinished open air concrete edifice surrounded by bars, complete with bats that flew about during our evening meetings. Local church members proved to be faithful attendants, providing enthusiastic music as well as extending gracious hospitality and friendship toward us. As we worked together, our hearts were knit in love and mutual respect in the work of soul saving. It didn’t take us long to discover plenty of reasons to come to Guapiles!

People came to me with their health challenges. I have spent my entire life trying to learn how to help people in any culture or locale to recover from any sickness through means of the simplest of natural remedies that cost nothing. In my country, my self-education is little appreciated, but in Guapiles, the people LISTENED to me, BELIEVED ME, and started to practice the things I taught! I was invited to visit a lady with cancer. When my transportation arrived to take me on an all day venture to a distant place, I was shocked to see all the ladies from the church filling an entire van plus an elder, a brother I had not met. I was so moved by their enthusiasm and desire to learn that I could hardly speak!

We shared a rich and beautiful day together. We gave the sick lady a hydrotherapy treatment. But since she was fearful and not very co-operative, we terminated the treatment early. After she rested in bed for a while, she suddenly sat up and exclaimed, “I feel better!” The look on her face showed shocked delight! Now, being intrigued she was open to the idea that the simple agencies of nature were her best friends in combating pain and energizing her body.

My husband and I are invited back to participate in a week of prayer and give more health education next year. We have enjoyed this entire experience. Also we have shared sweet fellowship with the fellow team members working in the area and our own Guapiles congregation. Our translator will be a close lifelong friend. She plans to visit our home during her next vacation. We are very grateful to Quiet Hour for providing the structure necessary for such a rich experience.
